<description>A pit bull will respond, in-kind, to patience, a gentle touch and quiet voice. Always remember that this is like a 2-year-old child and will never be more than a 3-year-old child in understanding and judgment. Keep him close. He will suffer from "separation anxiety" and "fear of abandonment" just like a young child. If you have never trained a puppy, by ALL MEANS, get a book on housetraining. Also be sure to have him neutered to avoid all kinds of problems associated with adult males, including territory-marking, aggressiveness, wanderlust, etc. Classes for puppies are available too, at Petsmart, for instance, and this is important for him to learn "socializing" skills when around other dogs, so he isn't always trying to be "dominant" or "alpha" and aggressive.

We sometimes call our new puppy, "Shy" as well, as her full name is "CheyAnna." She is named after a fictional character in one of my novels. You can see me recent article about "CheyAnna" in my post entitled, "What I Love About Dogs" at the Retired and Restless blog.
